Sri Lanka’s chase started strong, with openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis scoring 56 runs in the first six overs with the help of the powerplay. Even after the defensive restrictions were lifted, New Zealand struggled to contain their scoring. Mitchell Santner was the only bowler who could do the holding job, and the two Lankan openers managed to see him off. Looking for inspiration, Mitchell Santner turned to Jacob Duffy, and he did not disappoint.

19.6 – Straighter over the stumps. Binula Fernando drove it straight to mid-off and executed a single. New Zealand won by 8 points, a stunning comeback from the Kiwis!

New Zealand pulled off a spectacular heist and took a 1-0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka will be saddened by losing their manager. They were in complete control of the first 13 overs of the chase, sitting comfortably at 120/0 with all 10 wickets intact. They needed just 53 runs in the final seven overs and looked like they had won the match by a narrow margin. But New Zealand had other ideas and staged a remarkable comeback to wrest victory from the brink of defeat.

19.5 – More stump lines. Binula Fernando hit the ball hard from midfield to the left, allowing the batsmen to score a few runs.

Masisha Pathirana will take the bat, but for now he will be on the non-striker side.
