Google is adding some festive spirit to the workplace with an “Ugly Sweater” contest, and CEO Sundar Pichai didn’t hesitate to join in on the fun.

Taking to Instagram on Christmas Day, Pichai shared a photo from the quirky event where his sweater went viral for its obvious Indian connection.

The contest, held last week, featured Google employees wearing colorful knitwear decorated with all sorts of festive motifs. The event, judged by Google’s AI assistant Gemini, showcased creative designs ranging from dazzling patchwork to traditional Christmas symbols.

While many participants preferred flashy styles, Pichai’s choices were understated, yet unique and personal. He wore a black pullover decorated with a cricket bat, a cricket ball and a Christmas tree, representing his abiding love for Indian cricket.

“Last week we wrapped up 2024 with our first ever Ugly Sweater Holiday Contest for Google. The judges were Gemini and I have to say they had great taste 🙂 Congratulations to all the winners . And thank you to everyone for the happy end to this year,” the post’s caption reads.

Social media users quickly noticed the connection. Comments poured in, with one person saying: “Cricket sweater is the best,” while another added: “Love your cricket sweater.”

For Pichai, the sweater seemed to reflect his roots. The Chennai-born technology leader has often spoken of his passion for cricket and even admitted that he once dreamed of playing professionally.

A staple of holiday festivals, the tradition of the ugly sweater has evolved from its kitschy beginnings in the 1950s to a beloved modern trend.

This year, Google put a twist on the tradition, combining cricket, Christmas, and a little personal flair to bring some festive fun to the workplace, with Pichai leading by example.
