On Sunday (December 22, 2024), US President-elect Donald Trump named Indian-American venture capitalist Sriram Krishnan as his senior policy advisor on AI.

“Sriram Krishnan will serve as senior policy advisor for artificial intelligence in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy,” Trump said.

Krishnan will work with David Sachs, former PayPal chief operating officer who was chosen by President Trump to lead White House policy on AI and cryptography.

“Working closely with David Sachs, Sriram will focus on ensuring continued U.S. leadership in AI and will continue to develop AI policy across the government, including in collaboration with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology,” he said. “We will support the formation and coordination of the Appointments regarding AI.

Krishnan is not new to Silicon Valley, especially after billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter and asked an Indian-American software engineer to temporarily run the platform in 2022. Since then, he has emerged as a leading figure in the technology world.

Mr. Krishnan is a native of Chennai, India, and has built a reputation in Silicon Valley as a strategic thinker and builder. His career trajectory includes influential roles at tech giants like Facebook (now called Meta), Twitter, and Snap. At Facebook, Mr. Krishnan played a key role in developing the Facebook Audience Network, which competes with Google’s advertising technology. In my first role at Twitter, I oversaw product efforts aimed at increasing user engagement.

Mr. Krishnan moved from an operational role to join Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), one of Silicon Valley’s most prominent venture capital firms, as a general partner. At a16z, we focused on emerging technologies, specifically AI and cryptocurrencies. This is a field that is currently shaping the future of the technology industry. He also spearheaded the company’s international expansion efforts, including the creation of a16z’s first London office outside the United States.

Krishnan’s views on AI

Mr. Krishnan’s role as Senior AI Policy Advisor reaches a critical juncture as AI increasingly impacts geopolitics, global competitiveness, and economic development. His work at a16z aligns closely with emerging trends in AI, including advances in generative AI, personalized AI assistants, and ethical considerations in the deployment of such technologies.

In his capacity as a venture capitalist, Mr. Krishnan emphasized the potential of AI to reshape industries in various speeches. Speaking about the intersection of AI and business, he once said: “Companies that embrace AI not as a tool but as a foundational capability will define the next decade.”

Mr. Krishnan’s expertise will be critical as the United States establishes itself as a leader in AI innovation. He will play a key role in advising the Trump administration on AI policy, along with AI and cryptocurrency expert David Sachs. The two countries will work together to address the area of balancing innovation and regulation, a challenge that is central to maintaining the country’s competitiveness in AI.

What are critics saying about President Trump’s AI policies?

Mr. Krishnan’s appointment as Senior AI Policy Advisor for AI prompted mixed reactions from experts and commentators in the technology community. Some have concerns about the administration’s approach to AI policy, particularly the potential for deregulation.

Some see the involvement of technology industry leaders like Krishnan and Sachs in AI policy as creating a potential conflict of interest. Given Mr. Krishnan’s background at companies such as Microsoft, Twitter and Meta, some observers worry that his appointment could lead to policies favoring big tech companies over the public interest. .

The Financial Times notes that people like AI and crypto czar-appointed David Sachs have a history of “often attracting criticism,” and that similar scrutiny could apply to Krishnan. It suggests that there is a sex.

There are also concerns about the impact of government AI policies on safety and ethical standards. Both major political parties have expressed support for AI development, but implementation details are critical. Critics argue that without strict safeguards, rapid advances in AI could lead to unintended consequences such as bias and ethical dilemmas.

In summary, while Sriram Krishnan’s appointment brings a wealth of industry experience to the administration, critics have questioned the potential for deregulation, industry bias, and the adequacy of safeguards in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. It has also caused concern among the public.
