Thank you everyone for coming to our first and last reading session. I’m sorry for how long it took you to set up a date, but between work, kids, and pretending to participate in an adult recreational sports league, we all have incredibly busy schedules. It seems there are. After months of consideration and hundreds of messages in group chats, we’ve decided that the third Tuesday of the month from 4:27pm to 5:36pm (non-Gibbs months) is the only time that works for everyone. It seems it’s time.
We spent many hours planning, and I’m so glad we were able to start this book club and strengthen our bond as friends by holding monthly sessions to enrich our minds. Books are really wonderful. They’re like watching a movie with subtitles, except Billie Eilish hasn’t recorded any original songs, and unless you’re willing to put in the effort of imagining them in your head, there’s no way they’re worth paying attention to. There is no such person.
I’m especially looking forward to discussing this month’s first/last book. A charming person in the movie (as we’ve established, movies are like books about going to the gym and getting buff) recommended this book to me. And I implicitly trust the public who own their own tequila brand. Plus, the book comes with a little silver badge so you know you’re about to delve into the literary award prize.
I feel like we talked a lot. Does anyone want to share their thoughts on this month’s books and list the different themes? No? I’ll be honest. I’ve had a very busy month trying to find a new coffee table on Facebook Marketplace and thinking endlessly about the possibility of my own death, but I haven’t had a chance to read the book. did. Lead the discussion. Maybe someone else who read this book…
Oh, okay, none of us read books? Well, at least we’re all on the same page! Hahaha, book club humor, right? I’m sure we can come up with some kind of discussion. Daniel said he skimmed the Wikipedia page before falling down the rabbit hole of unresolved air traffic accidents. And then Sasha heard an audio recording of a completely different book. The book is not really a story, but rather a series of loosely related vulgar scenes featuring a tortured yet deeply empathetic tattooed centaur with the physical strength and mental intelligence of a stallion. It was. I’m a man. Was it written by a middle-aged woman? interesting. And Janine. . . Thought this was just brunch? Janine, please read the group chat once. Obviously reading isn’t our strong suit, but since you mentioned brunch, there’s a frittata place I’ve been wanting to try.
No, wait. Since this is about a book, I think I’ve gotten off topic. Books are amazing. They’re like mindlessly scrolling on your phone, but instead of spending two hours in a dissociative state, you can spend two hours reading the same sentence because if you don’t actually pay attention to the words, you forget what’s going on. You’ll keep reading it over and over again. Perhaps we should put this discussion on hold for now and try again next month. Inevitably, then, there will be some superficial attempts to reschedule and redirect the group chat toward more realistic goals, before quietly bringing the book club to a close. We are planning a girls trip to Cancun. ♦
