“The inauguration tradition embodies the beauty of American democracy, and today we had the honor of dressing First Lady Melania Trump,” Lippes said in a statement. “Mrs. Trump’s costume was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen, and I take great pride in presenting such work to the world.”

Mrs. Trump, who is from Slovenia, is the second immigrant in U.S. history to serve as first lady. (London-born Louisa Adams, wife of President John Quincy Adams, was the first.) Although she wore mostly European brands during her husband’s first term (Dolce & Gabbana and Alexander McQueen), she (He was her favorite), and throughout much of his recent campaign, choosing Christian Dior on election night feels like Lippes’ choice is especially spot on. Much of the recent Trump campaign has focused on strengthening the American economy. The New York-born and based designer’s namesake label is an independent business just over a decade old and is markedly different from American fashion titan Ralph Lauren, who dressed the First Lady at the 2017 Inauguration.
