IBM and C40 cities today announced a new collaboration through IBM Sustainability Accelerator, which aims to expand social innovation action in cities around the world.
In collaboration with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, the new project will develop artificial intelligence (AI) solutions, increase urban resilience and address the specific challenges facing urban communities.
In early 2024, IBM held on requests for proposals from nonprofits and government agencies, focusing on technology-driven projects to improve city resilience. C40 Centre was one of five organisations selected to participate in this new cohort of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator project, out of more than 100 applicants.
Participants were chosen for a significant level of support for the communities they serve and for innovative ways that each organization plans to utilize AI technology to build more resilient cities. Ta. Organizations receive up to $3 million in cash and in-kind donations for technology and services.

Next, during the development and implementation stages, IBM experts will organize IBM resources and technology, help participants achieve their goals, support pilot deployment in the community, and promote further scaling .
To date, 20 organizations have been part of IBM’s sustainability accelerators supporting vulnerable populations around the world. As of last year, IBM has supported approximately 65,300 direct beneficiaries through our sustainable agricultural cohort, and is projected to benefit from the clean energy cohort. And we expect these resilient urban projects to benefit thousands of citizens around the world.
