AI Agent will soon do all software engineers with years of experience: Openai CEO Sam Altman

Openai CEO Sam Altman has begun deploying AI agents. He says he will eventually become a human virtual co-worker. He also confirmed that AI agents will now perform many of the tasks that software engineers currently handle now with years of experience. This bold vision was outlined in a recent blog post where Altman discussed the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and the potential to transform industry.

Openai Sam Altman RollingAI Agent Works as a Software Engineer

Altman gave an example of a software engineering agent who can accomplish tasks normally assigned to software engineers at top companies. However, he revealed that these AI agents can perform tasks over a few days, but have no groundbreaking ideas and require human supervision.

In the long run, Altman imagines a world in which AI agents are deployed in various fields of knowledge. “Imagine those 1,000 or those 1 million people now,” he said, highlighting the size that these agents can operate. He compared the economic impact of AI to transistors, which revolutionized the industry, but are often unaware as they are now embedded in everyday life.

Altman’s comments come when artificial general information (AGI) is approaching reality. He believes that AGI can address complex issues at the human level in multiple fields, promote economic growth, and enable people to achieve more in their personal and professional lives. He further stated that over the next decade, all individuals can achieve more than the most shocking people today.

Altman also expressed concern about the balance of power between capital and labor, suggesting that early intervention may be necessary to prevent inequality. He came to the idea of giving people access to more AI resources, but he admitted that it might sound unconventional.

Meta recently confirmed plans to replace mid-level engineers with AI

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that AI from Meta and other tech companies will effectively replace the mid-level engineers writing code this year. This could change the way high-tech companies approach software development.

“All the code for the app and the AI that generates also reaches the point written by AI engineers, not people’s engineers,” he said. In the context, the report claiming that mid-level software engineers in the meta are currently earning salaries on six numbers, claims that AI can be significantly reduced.

Google is already using AI to generate code

Just a few months ago, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also announced that over 25% of all new Google code is generated by AI, and human engineers are intervening for the final review.

All big tech companies ensure that this does not affect humans, but only time can tell if human work will decrease due to AI. Companies have already fired thousands of employees in the name of cost-cutting or performance issues. If AI succeeds in replacing humans, companies won’t spend much time replacing virtual AI models. But of course, this can only affect people who work in mid-level engineering. All of these AI developments suggest that humans could be time to continue to be employed in large tech companies.
