summary
Amazon’s Android app underwent a major redesign last year, featuring a teal background and a simpler search bar layout. A new design we spotted this weekend tests a colorless, unbranded Amazon header with a pill-shaped search box. This design was rolled out to some devices, but was later rolled back on at least one, suggesting it may have been a test. However, we expect the new release to be widely available soon.
Amazon may be one of the largest or most popular e-commerce platforms in the world, but its Android app is pretty basic and doesn’t see much change. Brands sometimes change the color of their app header banners to coincide with the holiday season, such as Christmas green, but we don’t see any changes from the dark blue header with a rectangular search field and yellow buttons. yeah. But Amazon changed its look last weekend, and we think this look is here to stay.

Amazon’s Android app has changed significantly in 2024, replacing the dark blue header design with a simple search bar with integrated buttons on a teal blue background. If you open the website using a mobile browser app, you can still access the old design. On the left is an Amazon-branded hamburger menu button, and on the right are options to access your cart and user account. The search bar has only one button.
The ubiquitous design of mobile apps featuring a teal background has been ditched as the hamburger menu, cart button, and search button are all located in the bottom bar of the app. However, the search bar integrates voice search and Amazon Lens, a replica of the company’s Google Lens. In some cases, the header was even green to coincide with the festive season.
Latest design finally brings modernization
Limited release could be a test
Left to right: Amazon Web UI. The current Android app UI. Latest design changes
The latest design, which is just starting to roll out, features a pill-shaped search field with the same button layout. The field’s placeholder text has changed from “Search Amazon” to “Search or Ask a Question,” and the box color is now a very light gray.
In addition to that, you will also notice that the latest header design is completely colorless and lacks Amazon branding. Visually, this design also appears to take up less vertical space on the screen, leaving more room for promotional banners and Amazon recommendations.
I’ve seen this design rolled out across multiple devices in the Amazon app for Android in India. However, users in the US are still seeing the teal header, and one of my devices also returned to this look on Monday. Meanwhile, the company’s website still uses a blue and yellow theme. This allows the UI design to be in three different states depending on region and platform. The new look is cleaner and more modern, so we hope to see it integrated soon.
However, this may have been a more widespread test rollout, as the app reverted to a teal design on at least one of my devices. So while we don’t know if or when Amazon plans to modernize the interface, efforts and testing are definitely underway, so we just have to wait for the server-side switch.
