“Shang-Chi” introduced the title character, played by the handsome Simu Liu, as the son of immortal gangster Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung). Shu was granted immortality by ten magical bracelets that he wore on his upper and lower arms and that he could control with his mind. Shang-Chi was trained in martial arts as a boy and was expected to become Xu’s assassin, but due to moral objections he quit the family business and became San Francisco’s squire. One morning, Shang-Chi’s backstory is slowly revealed to his best friend Katie (Awkwafina) after the two encounter a spirited super soldier in town.
What follows is a complex Marvel adventure through magical bamboo forests, killer dragons, embittered sisters, hidden kingdoms, and portals to hell. Michelle Yeoh will appear in a bit role, and Ben Kinsley will return to reprise his role as Trevor from Iron Man 3.
“Shang-Chi” was well reviewed, with a 92% approval rating based on 344 reviews. No one made it to the year’s best list, but almost everyone gave it a pass. Additionally, many people logged onto Rotten Tomatoes to give the film a positive review, giving it a 98% audience score, now known as the Popcornmeter. Over 10,000 people gave it a thumbs up. But still, even with added salt, 98% is great.
